Sockpals are great

I’d like to thank Julie for being my sock pal and knitting me beautiful socks. These are the Embossed Leave socks from Interweave Winter 2005. They are super soft, knit in Taj Mahal, which feels and looks very much like baby cashmerino. I don’t even want to walk on the floor in these, they’re so nice. I want to frame them and look at them.

Not only that, but she made me a beautiful project bag and DPN roll. I love the matchy matchy, I do.

They’re green and leafy, to match the socks.
I get all wrapped up in knitting for my pal that I forget I have someone knitting for me too. I was expecting a few things from ebay, so when I looked in the mailbox, and there were two packages, I didn’t even think it would be socks. I was so surprised, and floored, and delighted.
I’ve also been working on that Sweetwater heel, I swear I’ve ripped and reknit this sucker so many times. I finally found a patterning I like. It matches the striping on the rest of the sock. That’s the Libran in me.

Unfortunately, there is a down fall. Let’s just say it was a cut and paste job.

Now I really like this heel. A few of you asked how it was done. Whelp, I always knit toe up, and I wanted to try a short row heel, rather than my usual afterthought. So I stole the basic constuction from another pattern. I cast on, and increase to 68 St, then work the foot, then increase about a third of the total number of st. I got to 88 St, the back half of the knitting will have many more st on it then the front, those are the st you work short rows on. They are decrease short rows, so I decrease to 64 st, then work the rest of the leg. Ta Da.

That project bag is gorgeous! Your heel is looking good now. I don’t know anything about astrology, but I guess your Libra-ness was good.

The socks are beautiful! I knit with Julie and we all oohs and aahs over them!

Oh, you got your socks already!! And they’re beautiful!! I really like them in (what my monitor says is) that soft yellow.

I feel your pain on the cut-and-paste heel …. I just knit a cut-and-paste toe because my mind’s eye wanted it that way.

Ummmmm wow. I’m just slighty jealous of that swag!!! Hot damn are those amazing!

Those look cool! Thanks for the directions on how to construct the heel, I have to try that one.

    Nice pal socks too.

Whoops, I found out last night I mailed them a day early *lol* I also meant to include my little homemade blockers which is part of what makes them look so nice- just printed out a photo of some store ones, blew it up on the printer and then traced it out onto some of that craft foam from the sewing store (the thick kind) and voila, nice sock blocker.

I was just asking for some toe-up sock hints last night so I’m glad you included some info about your heel. It looks perfect for my next pair of socks- some of that American flag yarn from Fortissima. I need some general directions for the first try on something and then I can wing it after that. Love those colors- I’ve been wanting to post a comment on them but didn’t want to give myself away 🙂

  11. Beth S. says:

Yep. You lucked out, all right. Those are GREAT socks! And the bag and needle roll are icing on the cake. 🙂

That’s an intriguing heel method, too. I wonder if you could do the same thing top-down?

  12. Jen says:

Ok, gotta ask – I’m not trying to be an idiot (but I might be succeeding) – how do you go from gusset increases to decreasing short rows? Somewhere in there you have to wrap them to start with, right?

    (confused)

  13. Dorothy B says:

Beautiful socks, gorgeous bag and DPN holder! Lucky you, you have a great sock pal!
That heel on your sock turned out great.

  14. Arleta says:

You were right, your new heels are way better. So, Libras like matching stuff? Man, that explains so much. I guess I’m not just crazy! I like everything to match or go together, and things should go in order. I just can’t read book two first or see part two of something first. Lucky you for the sock pal goodies. Those socks look really soft.

  15. Naomi says:

Love the happy stripey Sweetwater socks.

i saw these socks on your blog before MSW, and then i “lost” them …. but, while at MSW, i found some beautiful indigo koigu for my pair 🙂 thanks for the inspiration!

Googling shor-row heels, I found your post and was fascinated. I just finished a doll sized version. It is quite unique and lovely. It incorporates the best of the gusset and short-row shapping. Yours may become my new favorite heel. If you write up a pattern for distribution it could create a watershed amoung sock knitters. Give it a great name. You’ll become famous. Best!

Your socks look great! I love your heel.
I would like to try the heel myself.
    Where can I find instructions?

    Thanks!
